After cleaning up the second mess, we head into the house, and I go downstairs to check on everyone.

By now, fatigue weighs on me from flying all over the city and expending so much energy, not to mention the emotional drain. I should take Kellen up on playing Mr. Construction Worker soon. Even when I’m not using the energy in my core, my little storm needs a constant influx, so I burn through it faster than I’m used to.

But after thwarting two attacks, I need to first see my family to reassure myself that they’re safe and unharmed.

I spot Tac and Prem as soon as the staircase opens into the basement. They sprawl sleepily in the landing area of the basement, acting as fluffy guardians in front of the hall.

Pausing to rub their heads, I climb over Tac’s large body and walk into the guestroom, then step carefully into the bathroom. The marble floor is constantly wet now as our water beast divides her time between the bathtub and out in the open. She’s able to spend more and more time away from water, which I’m grateful for. It allows her more freedom than I initially thought she would have while here.

A splash from the tub tempts me to come closer, but I resist the urge, having fallen for this trick more than once already. Right on cue, she pops up out of the water and spits water in my direction. Laughing, I dodge, and it splats against the wall behind me. She drops back into the water until only her blue eyes poke out of the surface and little bubbles rise around her.

“Yes, you’re very clever,” I praise as I worriedly check the bathtub.

She’s growing fast, and even this luxury spa won’t contain her for much longer.

As if she knows what I’m thinking, she vanishes below the surface. A moment later, her tail emerges, sending another geyser of water in my direction.

“Okay, okay, I’m leaving.” Slipping and sliding, I make it back to the guestroom and use the plush carpet there to dry my feet.

The two fire beasts had taken up permanent residence in Torch’s room, refusing to be moved to their own space. And now they’ve turned it into a boys-only clubhouse, if the singed writing on the door is anything to go by.

I knock anyway and poke my head in, only to duck back out when a ball of fire flies at my face.

“No fireballs!” I yell. “We’ve talked about this!”

Torch pops into view and waves his new digits at the front of the door before pushing on my leg, telling me in no uncertain terms to go away.

My hands move to my hips. “I used to be the bright spot of your day. What happened to my baby ignis?”

He simmers a pale yellow as chirps of laughter come from behind him, and a moment later, he slams the door in my face.

I take a deep breath for patience. I read about this in the baby books, but I didn’t think it would happen so soon, or with Torch.
